Most trades sell a job. Pest control sells a job and then, often, a recurring plan, and that single difference should change what you are willing to pay for a lead.

A contractor comparing cost per lead against the price of one treatment is measuring the wrong thing. The number that matters is what a customer is worth across the contract they sign afterwards.

The maths are different, and better

A one-off general pest treatment is a modest ticket. A quarterly plan running for three years is a different proposition entirely, and it usually starts with exactly the same lead.

So work out your realistic figures before setting a budget: what proportion of first visits convert to a plan, what a plan is worth annually, and how long customers stay. A cost per lead that looks unaffordable against a single treatment is often comfortable against the contract value it produces.

This is the single most common misjudgement in pest control advertising, and it causes accounts to be switched off while they are profitable.

Job types do not behave alike

Local Services Ads let you select what you want leads for, and in this trade the categories differ enormously:

  • General pest. Steady volume, modest first ticket, the strongest path into a recurring plan.
  • Bed bugs. Urgent, high value, and searched with a particular privacy, people want it dealt with quickly and quietly. Leads cost more and close fast.
  • Termites. Frequently inspection-led and tied to a property sale, so the timeline is set by someone else’s closing date.
  • Wildlife and exclusion. Specialist, higher ticket, and often outside a general applicator’s scope.
  • Mosquito. Seasonal and heavily plan-oriented.

Enable them deliberately and measure cost per booked job for each. Enabling everything and reading one blended average tells you nothing about which of these is paying.

Licensing is the screening hurdle here

Pest control is licensed at state level, often with applicator categories that map imperfectly onto Google’s job types. The category you tick has to be covered by the licence you hold.

Where an application stalls in this trade, that mismatch is a common cause, alongside the name-matching problem that stalls applications generally.

Answering matters more when the caller is distressed

Someone who has just found bed bugs or seen a rodent is not in a patient frame of mind, and they will call the next listing rather than leave a message.

Response rate is weighted in placement anyway, but in this trade it also decides whether the lead you paid for converts at all. A missed call here is charged twice, once by Google and once in the job that went next door.

What to dispute

The recognisable invalid leads in pest control:

  • Tenants whose landlord holds the pest contract and who cannot authorise anything
  • Identification requests: people wanting to know what an insect is, with no intent to book
  • Outside the service area, particularly on wide rural radii
  • Pests you do not treat, where the job type is enabled too broadly

Dispute those weekly. Do not dispute leads that were real but did not book, for the reasons set out in what actually decides your position.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a pest control lead cost?

More than you would pay against a single treatment. Judge it against contract value: what proportion of first visits convert to a recurring plan, what the plan is worth annually, and how long customers stay. Measuring against one treatment is why profitable accounts get switched off.

Which job types should I enable?

Deliberately, and measure each separately. General pest, bed bugs, termites, wildlife and mosquito differ in urgency, ticket size and how readily they lead to a plan. One blended cost per lead across all of them hides which is paying.

Why do pest control applications stall?

Often a licence category mismatch. Pest control is licensed at state level with applicator categories that map imperfectly onto Google’s job types, and the categories you select have to be covered by the licence you hold.

How important is answering quickly?

More than in most trades. A caller who has just found bed bugs or a rodent will ring the next listing rather than leave a message, so a missed call costs you both the lead fee and the job.

Where to start

Work out what a customer is worth over the life of a plan rather than at the first visit. That figure sets your budget, and most pest control operators have never calculated it.
