Setting Up and Verifying a Google Business Profile

Home / Setting Up and Verifying a Google Business Profile

Creating a Google Business Profile takes about ten minutes. Getting it verified, proving to Google that the business is real and that you run it, is where contractors get stuck, and an unverified profile does almost nothing.

This is the setup path, in order, with the parts that trip up service-area businesses specifically.

Does your business already have a profile?

Check before creating one. Google generates listings automatically from other data sources, so a profile for your business may already exist unclaimed, and creating a second one produces a duplicate that suppresses both.

Search your business name and address. If a listing appears with “Claim this business”, claim that one rather than starting fresh. If you find more than one, you have a duplicate problem to resolve first, see how to fix duplicate listings.

What has to be filled in before verification?

Enough for Google to identify the business as real: exact legal name, primary category, service area or address, and a phone number that reaches you.

Name it exactly as it appears elsewhere

Match your signage, licence and other listings precisely. Adding keywords, “Smith Plumbing | Emergency Plumber Tampa”, violates the guidelines and is a common cause of suspension. It also breaks the consistency that local placement depends on.

Choose the primary category deliberately

This decides which searches you are eligible for, and it is the field most often set once and never revisited. Get it right at setup rather than discovering years later that you were never eligible for your own core search.

Set an honest service area

Name the places you genuinely dispatch to. Claiming everything within a hundred miles weakens relevance to each of them rather than extending reach.

How does verification work without a storefront?

Most contractors are service-area businesses, which changes what verification looks like. You still supply a physical address so Google can confirm the business exists, then you hide it from the public listing.

Hiding is not deleting. The address stays on file for verification and cross-referencing; it simply does not display. Deleting it instead is a frequent mistake and it undermines the verification the profile depends on.

What are the verification methods?

Postcard to the address, phone, email, or video. Which are offered depends on the business type and category; you do not get to choose freely, and for service-area businesses video verification has become common.

What does video verification involve?

A continuous unedited recording showing proof of location, proof of equipment or tools, and proof you manage the business. For a contractor that usually means the vehicle with signage, branded equipment, and access to something showing the business name.

Plan it before recording. It must be one take, and the most common failure is stopping the recording between the three elements.

What if verification fails?

It is usually fixable, and usually one of a small set of causes: the business name does not match other records, the address cannot be confirmed, the category suggests a business type requiring different proof, or a duplicate listing already holds the verification.

Resolve the underlying inconsistency before reapplying. Repeated failed attempts on the same unresolved problem can attract a suspension, which is a harder situation than an unverified profile, see reasons a profile gets suspended.

What comes after verification?

The profile is live and eligible, and now needs the fields that make it competitive: services listed individually, hours including seasonal changes, photographs of real work, and a routine for requesting reviews.

Verification gets you into the running. What decides placement from there is relevance, distance and prominence, covered in how Google decides which profiles show in the map pack.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Video and phone verification can complete within days; postcard verification takes longer because it depends on mail delivery. Review times vary, and a profile in review is not yet eligible for the map results.

Can I verify without a physical address?

You supply an address for verification even as a service-area business, then hide it from the public listing. Hiding keeps it on file for verification while keeping it off the profile customers see. Deleting it instead undermines verification.

Why did my verification get rejected?

Most often a business name that does not match other records, an address Google cannot confirm, a category implying a different business type, or an existing duplicate listing holding the verification. Fix the underlying inconsistency before reapplying, repeated failed attempts can lead to suspension.

Should I create a new profile if I cannot find mine?

Search thoroughly first, including variations of your business name and your address. Google creates listings automatically, so one may exist unclaimed. Creating a second produces a duplicate that suppresses both and is harder to resolve than claiming the original.

Where to start

Search your business name and address before doing anything else. Whether a listing already exists, and whether more than one does, determines the entire path from here.
