Answer Engine Optimization

The problem with ranking first

A homeowner asks an assistant which company to call. It answers in a paragraph. Nobody scrolls a results page, nobody compares ten listings, and the position you fought for is behind an answer that already named somebody else.

This is not a prediction. Google's AI Overviews sit above the organic results on a growing share of queries, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot answer service questions outright. Ranking first still matters, but ranking first in a list that fewer people read is worth less every quarter.

  • No long-term contracts
  • Every marketing dollar is tied directly to a closed invoice

Answer Engine Optimization is the work of being the source those answers are assembled from. Not the link underneath. The sentence itself.

Why it is not just SEO with a new name

SEO optimizes a page so a person clicks it. AEO optimizes a page so a machine can lift a specific, correct claim out of it and attribute that claim to you. Those are different jobs, and the second one has requirements the first never had.

  • A machine has to be able to tell who you are. Not what you rank for, who you are. One consistent entity, described the same way in your markup, your Google Business Profile, your citations and your copy. Ambiguity is fatal in a way it never was for ranking.
  • Answers have to be extractable. A question with its answer directly underneath, in plain sentences, is quotable. The same information spread across three paragraphs and a slideshow is not.
  • Being wrong is worse than being invisible. A model that reads a stale claim will repeat it long after you fix the page. Accuracy stops being hygiene and becomes the product.

What we do

  • Entity groundwork. One coherent machine-readable record of the business across every page, organization, services, locations, people, so an assistant can say who you are without guessing.
  • Answer-first content structure. Real questions as headings with the answer directly beneath them, written to be lifted verbatim and still be true out of context.
  • Structured data that matches the page. Markup describing what a visitor actually sees, not markup gaming a rich result. Answer engines cross-check, and a mismatch costs trust that is slow to rebuild.
  • Citation surfaces. The reviews, profiles and third-party mentions an answer engine leans on when it decides which of four local companies to name.

What honest measurement looks like

This is the part most agencies skip, so here it is plainly: AEO is harder to measure than SEO, and anyone promising you a clean dashboard is overselling it.

Assistants do not publish rank. Much of the traffic they send arrives with no referrer or attributed to direct. There is no equivalent of a position-three-to-position-one report, and there will not be one soon.

What can be measured, and what we report: whether assistants name you for the questions that matter to your market, tested and logged over time; whether your entity record is consistent and complete; Search Console impressions on question-shaped queries; and the leads that arrive already knowing your name. It is a partial picture. It is a real one.

Who this is for

Home-service businesses in competitive markets where the phone is the product, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and the trades around them. It works best alongside the fundamentals rather than instead of them: a business with no reviews, an unclaimed profile and a slow website does not have an AEO problem yet.
