What contractors in Chicago & the Great Lakes are up against
The rules change at each border, and in Chicago they change at the city limits. Illinois licenses plumbers through the Department of Public Health and roofers through a state roofing act, and both laws require the license number in your advertising. The City of Chicago adds its own general contractor, plumbing, electrical and drain layer licenses. Indiana licenses plumbing contractors at the state level, and Michigan licenses residential builders, maintenance and alteration contractors and the mechanical trades.
The housing tells you where the work is. About 39 percent of Chicago's homes were built before 1940 and almost 400,000 lead service lines run under its streets, while the Indianapolis metro authorized almost as many new single-family homes in 2025 as the entire Chicago metro. Lake Michigan adds lake-effect snow along its southern and eastern shores, and severe storms account for most of Illinois' billion-dollar weather disasters.

Questions
Contractor marketing in Chicago & the Great Lakes, answered
- Does Real Time Marketing work with contractors in Chicago and the Great Lakes?
- Yes. We run Local Services Ads, Google Business Profile management, SEO and AI search visibility for home service contractors in Chicago, the Chicagoland suburbs, Northwest Indiana, Indianapolis and Grand Rapids. We are based in Bradenton, Florida, and have worked with contractors since 2016.
- Do Illinois contractors have to put a license number in their ads?
- Plumbers and roofers do. The Illinois Plumbing License Law requires plumbing advertisements to include the license number, and the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act requires roofers to include their license number and licensed name in advertising. We build that into your website, profile and ad copy from day one.
- Can one campaign cover Chicago, Northwest Indiana and Michigan?
- Technically yes, but it rarely should. Licenses are issued state by state and Chicago adds its own, so we set service areas by ZIP code inside the places your licenses cover and give each state its own pages and budget. That keeps you from paying for calls you cannot legally take.
- How do lake-effect snow and storms affect contractor marketing here?
- They create bursts of roofing, gutter, no-heat and frozen pipe calls along the lake and storm-damage calls after summer severe weather. We keep storm and cold-weather job types ready, raise budgets only for the areas your crews can reach and answer calls quickly, because Google says missed calls may hurt responsiveness.
- What does Advanced LSA Max include?
- Advanced LSA Max combines local directory set-up and Google Business Profile optimization, ongoing Google Business Profile management, Local Services Ads plus Performance Max management, and lead call tracking with ROAS attribution. Across this market we plan each part around state lines, Chicago's city licensing and the weather.
