Generative engine optimisation is being sold hard, and a contractor should know two things before buying any of it: most of what it asks for is work you were already meant to do, and nobody can submit you to an AI answer.
What the term is pointing at
The idea behind the label is real enough. When an answer is assembled from sources rather than listed as links, being one of the sources it draws on matters, and that is not identical to ranking first.
So there is something to aim at. The question is whether it needs a separate discipline, a separate budget line and a separate invoice, and for a home service contractor, mostly it does not.
Most of the checklist is the old checklist
Read any serious version of this advice and you find: answer questions directly, structure content clearly, be accurate, be consistent about who you are and where you work, earn mentions elsewhere, keep your local listings correct.
Every one of those was already the right thing to do. They were the right thing when the output was ten blue links, and they are the right thing when the output is a paragraph. What changed is the reward, not the work.
That should make you sceptical of anyone presenting this as a new service requiring new fees, and reassured that you are not starting from behind.
The parts that genuinely are different
Three, and they are worth naming because they are where the effort actually goes.
Being quotable rather than rankable. A page can rank well and still be useless to something trying to extract an answer, because the answer is buried under three paragraphs of preamble. Stating the answer plainly near the top changes that.
Consistency across sources matters more. Systems assembling a description favour what agrees across many places. One neglected directory carrying an old phone number now has more influence than it used to, the audit for that is in what AI says about your business.
You cannot see the results. There is no ranking report. You can check by asking, and you can watch branded search volume, and that is close to all.
Nobody can submit you
Worth saying plainly because it is being sold. There is no directory of AI answers, no submission form, no paid inclusion, and no mechanism anyone can operate on your behalf to place your business inside a generated response.
If somebody offers to get you into AI answers and will not explain exactly what they will do: in terms of pages, listings and consistency, they are selling the ordinary work under a newer name, or nothing at all.
What a contractor should actually do
- Fix the profile first. Categories, hours, service area, reviews. It decides the local results that produce your work, and it feeds the descriptions.
- Answer the awkward questions on your own pages. What jobs cost and why they vary, when a repair beats a replacement, what goes wrong. Most contractor sites avoid exactly these, which is why so few are quotable.
- Make the details agree everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours, across every listing you can find.
- Then stop. Beyond that the returns are speculative, and the same money in answering the phone faster is not.
Frequently asked questions
Do contractors need generative engine optimisation?
Not as a separate service. Most of what it asks for: direct answers, accurate listings, consistency, real expertise, was already the right work. What changed is the reward, not the task.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
No. There is no submission process or paid inclusion. Anyone offering one without explaining exactly which pages and listings they will fix is selling ordinary work under a new name.
What actually is different about it?
Being quotable rather than merely rankable, consistency across sources mattering more than it did, and the absence of any report telling you how you are doing.
How do I measure it?
Ask an assistant about your business and read the answer. Watch searches for your business name. There is no equivalent of a rank tracker, and anyone selling one is estimating.
Where to start
Open your most valuable service page and see whether it says, in the first two sentences, what the job costs and when it is needed. If it does not, that is the generative engine optimisation work, and it is the same work that helps a human reader decide to call you.
