AI Mode is a separate way of searching, not a change to the results page you already know. Understanding which of the two you are looking at is the first thing, because they behave differently and the advice for them is not the same.
Three things that get confused
They arrived close together and are routinely discussed as one, which is why so much of the guidance contradicts itself.
The ordinary results page is what it has always been: links, and for a local search, a map with businesses in it.
AI Overviews are the summary that sometimes appears at the top of that ordinary page. You did not ask for it and you did not leave the normal results to get it: it sits above them, pushing the links down.
AI Mode is a distinct place you go into. You are no longer looking at a list; you are in a conversation that answers in prose, and you can ask follow-up questions that keep the earlier context.
The first two happen to you. The third is chosen.
Why the conversational part matters more than the summary
A search box takes one question at a time and forgets it immediately. A conversation does not.
Somebody can ask what a noise from their heating means, then ask whether it is urgent, then ask what it costs to fix, then ask who nearby does it, and each question is understood in the light of the previous ones. What used to be four separate searches, each an opportunity for a different business to be found, becomes one continuous exchange.
That is the actual change. Not that answers are summarised, but that a whole decision can happen without returning to a list of links.
What it means for a local trade, honestly
Less than for a publisher, and the reason is worth understanding.
A site that lives on informational traffic loses badly when the answer is given without a click. A contractor does not live on that traffic. Your work comes from people who need somebody to come to the house, and that still resolves into a local result with a phone number, whichever interface they used to get there.
Where it does reach you is the layer above the booking: the research a homeowner does before deciding, which used to bring them to your pages. That traffic is genuinely at risk, which matters most for the deferred, expensive work where reading precedes deciding.
It is still moving
Worth stating plainly rather than writing with false confidence: the availability, the placement and the behaviour of these features have changed repeatedly and will change again.
Treat anything you read about the specifics: including this, as a description of a moving target, and be suspicious of advice built on exactly how it looks today. What is durable is the direction, not the layout.
What does not change
The preparation is the same regardless of which of the three a customer used.
Be the business whose profile is accurate and whose reviews are current, because local results still resolve to that. Answer real questions plainly on your own pages, because that is what any of these systems can draw on. Say what things cost. Be clear about where you work.
None of that is new advice, which is the point. What changed is the interface, not what makes a business findable and worth calling.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI Mode in Google Search?
A separate conversational way of searching that answers in prose and keeps context across follow-up questions, rather than returning a list of links. It is chosen, unlike AI Overviews, which appear on the ordinary results page.
How is it different from AI Overviews?
Overviews are a summary placed above the normal results you were already looking at. AI Mode is a distinct place you enter, where the exchange continues across several questions.
Does this hurt local contractors?
Less than publishers. Work that requires somebody to attend a property still resolves into a local result with a phone number. The exposure is to the research traffic that used to arrive before a decision.
What should I change because of it?
Little that was not already worth doing: an accurate profile, current reviews, plain answers to real questions on your own pages, and clarity about price and service area.
Where to start
Ask it the question a customer would ask before hiring you, and read what comes back. Whether your business is mentioned, and what it says about your trade, tells you more than any article about the feature, including this one.
