Your Traffic Will Fall. That Is Not the Number

Home / Your Traffic Will Fall. That Is Not the Number

Your website traffic is going to fall while your business becomes no less findable. If you judge performance on sessions, that will read as a decline, and you will be tempted to fix something that is not broken.

The gap between being seen and being visited

Research from the Pew Research Center found that among search users shown an AI summary, 8% clicked a link in the results, against 15% among those shown traditional results: roughly half the click-through, on the same searches.

Read that as a measurement problem rather than a catastrophe. The same number of people are asking; fewer of them arrive on a website to get the answer. For a contractor, whose income depends on calls rather than page views, that is a change in what your analytics can see, not necessarily a change in your business.

The danger is reacting to the wrong number. A contractor who sees sessions halve and concludes their marketing has failed may cut the work that is still producing the phone calls.

Stop judging on sessions

Sessions were always a poor proxy for a trade and they are now actively misleading. Somebody who reads a summary naming you, then rings the number in your listing, has produced revenue and no session at all.

What to watch instead, in order of usefulness: booked jobs, calls answered, form submissions, and cost per booked job by channel. All of those survive the change because they measure the outcome rather than the route.

Watch impressions against clicks

Search Console reports both. The relationship between them is now the interesting figure.

Impressions holding steady or rising while clicks fall is the signature of answers being given without a visit. That is the expected pattern, and it means you are still being surfaced.

Impressions falling is a different matter entirely, and it is the one worth acting on; that is a visibility problem, not a summarising one, and the usual causes are ordinary: a competitor, a technical fault, a ranking loss.

Separating those two prevents most of the panic in this area.

Branded searches are the closest thing to a mention counter

There is no report telling you how often an assistant named your business. There is a decent proxy: how many people search for your name.

Somebody who hears about you in a summary and then looks you up directly shows up in Search Console as a branded query. A rising trend in searches for your business name, while your general traffic falls, is reasonable evidence you are being mentioned rather than forgotten.

It is imperfect and it is far better than nothing.

Ask where callers heard of you

Unfashionable and increasingly the most reliable instrument you have. As attribution degrades, the question at the start of the call recovers some of what the reporting lost.

It only works if the answers are written down. One field in the job record, filled in every time, produces a picture by the end of a quarter that no analytics package can currently give you.

Set expectations before the numbers move

If somebody reports on marketing to you, or you report to a partner, agree now what a good month looks like under these conditions. Otherwise the first quarter of falling sessions becomes an argument about whether the work is failing, held without the right numbers to settle it.

A simple standard: bookings and cost per booked job decide it. Sessions are context.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website traffic falling?

Partly because answers are given without a visit. Pew found click-through roughly halved when an AI summary was shown. Check whether impressions held steady: if they did, you are still being surfaced.

What should a contractor measure instead of sessions?

Booked jobs, calls answered, form submissions and cost per booked job. All measure the outcome rather than the route, so they survive the change.

Can I tell whether AI is mentioning my business?

Not directly. Searches for your business name are a reasonable proxy, rising branded queries alongside falling general traffic suggests you are being named.

Is asking callers where they heard of us still worth it?

More than it was. As automatic attribution degrades, a single field in the job record, filled in every time, gives you a picture the analytics cannot.

Where to start

Open Search Console and put impressions and clicks on the same chart for the last year. If impressions held while clicks fell, nothing is broken and your reporting is measuring the wrong thing.
