Google Ads for Sewer and Drain Contractors

Home / Google Ads for Sewer and Drain Contractors

The most expensive mistake in sewer and drain advertising is bidding on the word you use for the work rather than the words your customers use.

Almost nobody searches “trenchless pipe lining”. They search “sewer backup”, “main line clog”, “sewer line repair cost”, “sewage smell in yard”. Trenchless is a solution they learn about from you, usually after the call.

Bid on symptoms, sell the method

Your keyword list should be built from what a worried homeowner types, not from your service menu:

  • sewer line repair / sewer line replacement
  • sewer backup, main line backup
  • drain keeps clogging, toilet backing up in basement
  • tree roots in sewer line
  • sewer camera inspection
  • sewer smell in yard

Keep a small campaign on method terms: “trenchless sewer repair”, “pipe lining”, “pipe bursting”, because the people searching those are further along and often comparing quotes. But do not expect volume from them.

The landing page has to teach

Unusually for paid search, your page has a job beyond converting: most visitors do not know the work can be done without excavation.

So the page that receives symptom traffic should show the comparison, the dug-up driveway against the intact lawn, before it asks for anything. That is the argument, and a page that opens with a contact form asks for a decision the visitor is not yet equipped to make.

A high cost per click can still be cheap

Sewer keywords are expensive, and contractors switch them off on that basis alone. That is the wrong comparison.

Work out your close rate on these enquiries and the average value of a lining or replacement, and the arithmetic usually looks quite different from what the click price suggested. Judge it on cost per booked job, which for five-figure work tolerates a click price that would be absurd for drain cleaning.

One related misconception is worth clearing up, because it leads contractors to solve this with money: raising your bid does not simply buy a higher position. Placement combines your bid with relevance, so a well-matched ad and page can outrank a higher bidder while paying less per click.

Remarketing earns its place here

A homeowner facing a five-figure sewer decision gets two or three quotes over a fortnight. That gap is exactly what remarketing is for, and it is cheap relative to the job.

Keep it plain: your name, the no-dig comparison, a number, rather than discount-led. Nobody chooses a sewer contractor on a coupon.

Negative keywords for this trade

  • Rental and DIY: “camera rental”, “snake rental”, “auger”, “how to unclog”
  • Products: “drain cleaner”, “root killer”, “chemicals”
  • Employment and training: “jobs”, “salary”, “certification”, “school”
  • Municipal: “city sewer department”, “who is responsible”, unless you want those enquiries
  • Septic, if you do not do septic work, the searches overlap constantly

Frequently asked questions

Should I bid on the word “trenchless”?

Only in a small campaign. Customers search their symptom: sewer backup, main line clog, roots in the line, and learn the word trenchless from you. Method terms carry low volume, though the searchers are further along.

Sewer keywords are expensive. Are they worth it?

Usually, but judge them on cost per booked job rather than cost per click. A five-figure replacement tolerates a click price that would be indefensible for a drain cleaning.

Does a higher bid get me a higher position?

Not by itself. Placement combines your bid with relevance, so a well-matched ad and landing page can outrank a higher bidder and pay less per click.

Is remarketing worth it for sewer work?

Yes, more than for most trades. The decision takes a fortnight and several quotes, so staying visible during that gap is cheap relative to the value of the job.

Where to start

Pull your search terms report and check how much you are spending on method keywords versus symptom keywords. Most sewer accounts are weighted the wrong way round, because the keyword list was written from the service menu.
