Being Named, Not Just Ranked

Home / Being Named, Not Just Ranked

Diamond Auto Glass & Tint is not a home service contractor, and the reason their result is worth reading is that the mechanism behind it has nothing to do with what they sell. It is about being the business a recommendation names, which is the same problem for any local trade.

The shift from ranking to being recommended

Local visibility used to be a question of position. Appear near the top, earn the click, get the call.

Increasingly a customer is handed a shortlist instead: by a map result, a summary, an assistant answering in sentences. The question changes from whether you appear in a list to whether you are one of the two or three named, and that is decided largely by signals you do not write yourself.

What they actually did

The work was reputation at scale, sustained rather than campaigned. Reviews collected as an operational routine tied to job completion instead of an occasional push. A profile kept accurate. Consistent details across the places that describe the business.

None of it is clever. Its difficulty is entirely in keeping it going through busy months, which is where most attempts stop.

Why reviews do more than reassure

The obvious function is persuasion, a customer reads them and decides. The less obvious one is that they are among the few things about a business that are verifiable, numerous and independently written.

That makes them unusually useful to any system deciding which businesses to name. A claim on your own website is an assertion. Two hundred reviews, written by different people over years, are evidence, and recency shows the business is still trading and still doing the work.

Which is also why a burst is worth less than a trickle, the argument in why recent reviews beat more reviews.

Why an auto glass business is a fair comparison

The purchase has the same shape as a trade’s. It is local, because the work happens where the vehicle or the property is. It is unplanned, arriving through damage rather than intention. The customer cannot judge the quality of the work and is choosing on signals instead. And they are unlikely to choose again for years, so there is no loyalty to lean on.

Those conditions describe a plumber’s customer as accurately as a glass fitter’s, which is why the approach transfers even though the trade does not.

What it does not prove

One business, one market, one period, with no counterfactual. We cannot say what would have happened had nothing changed, and a result like this depends on things the write-up cannot capture: the competitive field, the quality of the work, whether the phone was answered.

Read it as an illustration of a mechanism rather than a forecast. Anybody offering you this as a projection is selling something.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a trust-signal approach work for local businesses?

Because customers cannot judge the work before buying it, so they choose on what can be verified: reviews, consistency, evidence of recent activity. The systems producing shortlists use the same material.

Do reviews matter beyond persuading customers?

Yes. They are among the few things about a business that are numerous, independently written and checkable, which makes them useful to anything deciding which businesses to name.

Does an auto glass case apply to a home service trade?

The purchase shape matches: local, unplanned, hard for the customer to judge, and rarely repeated. Those conditions rather than the trade are what the approach depends on.

Can I expect the same results?

No case study supports that. This is one business in one market with no counterfactual, and it illustrates a mechanism rather than predicting an outcome.
