Does Google Guaranteed Actually Increase Leads?

Home / Does Google Guaranteed Actually Increase Leads?

Here is the part most articles about the Google Guarantee leave out: every business showing in Local Services Ads has the badge. It is a condition of being there, not an advantage over the others who are.

So the badge cannot be what distinguishes you from the contractor listed above you. Understanding what actually does is the difference between a productive LSA budget and an expensive one.

What the badge really buys

Placement, not preference. Local Services Ads sit above the paid search ads and above the map pack, the first thing a searcher sees. The guarantee is the entry requirement for that placement, and what it covers is narrower than most contractors assume.

Against a business that is not in LSA, that placement is a real advantage. Against the two or three businesses shown beside you, the badge is worth nothing, because they have it too.

What actually decides your position inside LSA

Different from ordinary search ranking, and different from SEO. The factors that matter most:

  • Answering the phone. Response rate is heavily weighted. Missed LSA calls suppress your placement, and this is the single most common self-inflicted problem.
  • Review score and volume on your Google Business Profile, which LSA reads from.
  • Proximity to the searcher, as with any local result.
  • Your declared job types and whether they match the search.
  • Hours. You will not be shown for a search at a time you are closed.
  • Budget and bid, which govern how often you are eligible to appear at all.

Note what is absent: your website, your content, your backlinks. LSA does not read them. A contractor with a weak site and a fast phone will outperform a strong site that lets calls go to voicemail.

Dispute the bad leads

The most under-used control in the platform.

You pay per lead, and some leads are genuinely invalid: wrong service, outside your area, spam, a customer who dialled by mistake. Google lets you dispute those, and disputes that are accepted are credited.

Contractors who never dispute are paying for waste and, worse, are training the system on noise. Reviewing leads weekly and disputing the clearly invalid ones is a direct saving.

Do not dispute leads simply because they did not book. That is not what the mechanism is for, and a poor dispute rate is itself a signal.

How to tell whether it is working

Not by lead count. LSA lead volume tracks your budget, so of course it rises when you spend more.

Look instead at:

  • Cost per booked job, not cost per lead. LSA leads are phone calls, and call quality varies a great deal by job type.
  • Your answer rate. If it is below the high nineties, fix that before touching anything else.
  • Dispute acceptance rate, which tells you whether your job types and service area are set correctly.
  • Booked revenue by job type, so you can turn off the categories that generate calls you do not want.

Be sceptical of claims that the badge produces a specific percentage lift. The honest version is that LSA placement produces leads, the badge is the price of entry, and how many of those leads become jobs is mostly about how you handle the phone.

Where it does not help at all

Repeat customers, referrals, and commercial or contract work all arrive outside the platform, and the guarantee has no bearing on them. If most of your revenue comes from those, LSA is a smaller lever than its prominence suggests.

It also does nothing for jobs booked when a customer sees your ad and then calls your main number directly; those are neither charged nor covered.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Google Guarantee badge make me stand out from competitors?

Not from the ones beside you, because every business in Local Services Ads carries it. It distinguishes LSA results from everything below them on the page, which is a real advantage against businesses not in the programme.

What decides where I appear within Local Services Ads?

Response rate to leads, review score and volume, proximity, declared job types, your hours, and budget. Notably not your website or its SEO, LSA does not read them.

Should I dispute leads?

Yes, the genuinely invalid ones: wrong service, outside your area, spam, misdials. Accepted disputes are credited. Do not dispute leads merely because they did not book; that is not the purpose and a poor dispute rate is a signal in itself.

How do I measure whether LSA is working?

By cost per booked job rather than lead count, since lead count simply tracks budget. Also watch your answer rate: below the high nineties, that is the problem to fix first.

Where to start

Pull your answer rate for the last month. If calls are being missed, no amount of budget or badge will fix what that is costing you, and it is the cheapest thing on this page to correct.
